When I started this blog I wanted it to be an open and frank account of the process of making a debut feature film. After all, the title of the blog is ‘the trial and tribulations of making an independent feature film.’
Unfortunately, this week we had our first setback on The Fitzroy. Our casting director, Brendan, has had to leave the project due to other commitments.
Here’s what Brendan had to say.
“As much as I love the script and working with the people involved, my commercial workload is too much at present for me to give this film the input it deserves. I wish Andrew, Liam and James all the best for the future.”
Obviously this is a real shame and a setback for the film, but we totally understand Brendan’s decision and thank him for all the hard work and support he has put into the film. He has helped us get to where we are and he will be missed.
Films at any level face setbacks and hiccups and this is especially true with first films at micro budgets. The real challenge is how we as team deal with it and move on.
One of my favourite films is Jaws, and love the story of how despite being behind schedule, over budget and without a mechanical shark to shoot, Spielberg just kept on filming. As long as the camera’s rolling, you’re making a film. In the end they turned the problems of not having a ‘working shark’ into a huge positive and made one of the greatest films of all time, reinventing the monster film at the same time.
That lesson is incredibly important and one I want to emulate. As long as we can react and adapt we will be fine. This won’t be the last setback we face and probably not the largest but with the right attitude and hard work we’ll continue to move forwards and push the film towards that premiere!
Speaking of which… This upcoming week is going to be incredibly exciting. If you have been following us on facebook or twitter you will have seen we have announced the date for the launch of our crowd-funding campaign.
And it’s this coming Thursday!
I’ll tell you more about that in the next couple of days and on the ‘up’ side we have yet another massive announcement mid-week so keep an eye out for that.
Onwards and upwards.
